When a stimulus causes depolarization within the membrane of a neuron.
The impulse propagates down the axon in the following phases: depolarization, as Na+ flows into axon causing a rise in membrane potential, followed by repolarization as K+ flows out of the cell at the nodes of Ranvier. This process is called saltatory conduction.
