Acetylcholine (ACh)

The main neurotransmitter of the neuromuscular junction, responsible for skeletal muscle contraction in the PNS.

In the autonomic branch of the PNS, ACh plays a role in GI movement during “rest and digest”. ACh is also responsible for learning, memory, and attention in the CNS. Too much ACh in the PNS can lead to excessive muscle contraction, cramping, increased salivation, and lacrimation. Too little ACh in the CNS is associated with Alzheimer’s Disease.
